Flacourt mentioned it in his 1661 map and gave it the name Tametavi.
It was probably the phonetic translation of the time. It is also known as "Port aux prunes". While the Portuguese navigators, led by Saint Thomas, already gave it the name “Toamasina”. That could be translated: "it is sacred or it is salty". Closer to what we know of it today. As for its history, King Jean René chose it as his place of residence. Tamatave is therefore starting to have a decisive importance at the economic level and in terms of migratory flows. Indeed, it served as a gateway for all foreigners, supposed to come into contact with the royalty of Madagascar.
Lovers of travelogue will quote the Austrian Ida Pfeiffer (1797-1858). Her travel notes to Madagascar in 1857 remain a benchmark for the discovery of the Red Island at that time. It was a very grueling expedition.
Today, Tamatave has become a large port city, the gateway to most containers. Some will appreciate its nightlife specific to port cities.
